A Master product is a product that houses sub-products of this same name ie blocks master holds blocks products and a static master houses static products. In the case of master blocks you can associate multiple blocks products to the master this is particularly useful when you have different artwork to display on different options
As an example this customer had several different styles of business cards they wanted their customer to choose from so he created individual block products
He wanted the products to show as an option in a product so he created a Master block product and associated the products in the Blocks Master section of the product
now when the master product is run the customer can choose the card style they want from the drop down and the fields for that style will populate along with a thumbnail of the card they choose
